Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, Friday 21st July 1922.

Extract from obituary.

Mr Stewart was a native of the Stewartry, having been born in the parish of Minnigaff 65 years ago. He served his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in Newton Stewart, and came to Castle Douglas about 40 years ago, starting business along with his brother, the late Mr Thomas Stewart.

The firm soon became one of the most extensive of its kind over a wide area. Mr Stewart was elected to the town council in 1912, continuing to serve until retiring a few years ago. He was also a past master of St John's Lodge of Freemasons, and was a keen carpet and green bowler.

Predeceased by his only son some years ago, Mr Stewart is survived by his wife and a daughter. His funeral took place yesterday at Minnigaff Churchyard.
