Mr John Clark, joiner, Burn Street, Dalbeattie, died on Saturday afternoon. He was 78 years of age and up until a few weeks ago had been able to follow his occupation.
With the exception of three years his whole life was spent in his native town, and he had been in business for nearly half a century. Descended from a seafaring family, his father, David Clark, being skipper of the Water of Urr schooner "Jessie Maxwell," he followed the sea for a short time.
Afterwards, apprenticed as a joiner, he spent a year in Liverpool, and then returned to Dalbeattie, starting in business a few years later.
In 1868 he enlisted in the Galloway Rifle Volunteers, rising to the rank of colour-sergeant and served for 26 years.
He was twice married, and is survived by a widow and family of grown up sons and daughters.
