The Lenox's of Galloway

This well known American family, descended from James and Elizabeth (Sproat) Lenox of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, who were married in 1750 and had among others, four sons, viz.: William baptized 1752; David, 1753; Robert, 1760; and James, 1772.
Of these sons Robert came to America in his youth and was educated under the direction of his uncle at Burlington, N. J. In 1784, after a brief visit to Scotland, he engaged in business as a general merchant in New York City, where he accumulated a fortune and was a leader in many important business and philanthropic movements. He became a member of the Chamber of Commerce in 1815, was elected its vice-president in 1817, and from 1827 until his death, December 13, 1839, served as its president, being the 14th to hold the position. An appreciation of his character, successful ventures in trade and fortunate investments in the real-estate field is to be found in the Knickerbocker Magazine for March, 1840. James Lenox, the famous philanthropist and founder of the Lenox Library was his only son and heir.
David Lenox settled in Philadelphia.
The youngest son of James and Elizabeth (Sproat) Lenox, James, acquired a fortune as a member of the N. Y. firm of Lenox and Maitland. On his return to his native land he purchased the estate known as Dalscairth, in Kirkcudbrightshire, a few miles from Dumfries, where he died a bachelor, May 10, 1839.
Some eighty miles from Dumfries on a spur of single track and lying half a mile from the ruins of the Castle of Dunskey, is situated the village of Portpatrick, the nearest point to the Irish coast. From this spot came Patrick Lenox, a cousin of the Kirkcudbright clan, the third son of Robert and Margaret Lennox, who was born in 1750 and settled in Newcastle, Maine, where he married Margaret Mc Near, in 1785. He died April 19, 1831, and his widow followed him May 17, 1844. They had three sons: Robert, born March 13, 1786; Thomas, Nov. 1, 1788; and Patrick, May 15, 1794. 1697. July 2. Edict against the Executors of Janet Bell spouse to William Lennox present bailie of Kirkcudbright noting compearance made for David Lennox lawful son of the defunct, who is married and forisfamiliat, and also
compearance on behalf of Sarah Lennox daughter of the defunct as yet unforisfamiliat. William Lennox spouse of the said Janet Bell is decerned Executor.
1697. Sept. 21. Confirmed Testament of Janet Bell spouse to William Lennox present bailie of Kirkcudbright, who died in March, 1696, given up by her said husband. The Estate is valued to about £100. There were also a number of debts due, among which was one by James Bell in Drumruck. The whole amount being £943:12:0. They were due £359:15:0. The free gear is to be divided into two parts. William Lennox of Milnehouse is cautioner.
1698. May 31. Edict against the next of kin of the deceased Robert Lennox in Whitecroft, at the instance of Nicholas Lennox youngest lawful daughter {sic) of the defunct, and Hugh Wallace merchant in Kilmarnock, her husband. The said Nicholas Lennox is decerned Executor.
1706. Oct. 4. Edict against the next of kin of William Lennox late bailie of Kirkcudbright, at the instance of the widow [whose name is not given], and she is appointed Executrix.
1757. Sept. 30. Edict against the Executors and next of kin of the deceased Alexander Lennox of Hinton at the instance of Mary McKinnie his widow, who claims to be decerned Executor, and is so decerned.
1758. Jan. 2. Confirmed Testament of Alexander Lennox who died in March, 1756, given up by Mary McKinnie his widow. His Estate is valued to £45:6:10, consisting of debts due to him. Confirmed as above William McKinnie in Glentok, cautioner.
Edinburgh Testaments.
1598. Sept. 22. Testament testamentar of Jonet Levenox sometime spouse to Andrew Gordoun in Tunnyfad within the stewartry of Kirkcudbright, who died on ------, 1595, given up by herself on 20 December of that year.
The estate is valued to £616:16:8, consisting of farm stock and plenishing. There was due to them £59:6:8. They were due £356:13:4.
Her Testament is dated at Tiwnyfad 20 December, 1595, and in it she leaves certain things to Katharine her daughter; to Margaret Schaw my daughter in Glenken, 100 marks among her first husband's bairns equally; her room of Tannyfad to her son Robert Schaw and his heirs, and he is to be kind to his other brothers and sisters. She mentions as due to Alexander and Thomas Schaw of her bairns part, certain cattle, etc. Her eldest son is Robert Schaw; and there is also due bairns part to Katharine and Margaret Schaw her daughters; William Schaw of Newtoun of Kirkcryst is a debtor. Confirmed as above, John Inglis, burgess of Kirkcudbright, cautioner. (Vol. 32.)
1598. Dec. 9. Testament Testamenter of Janet Levenox sometime spouse to Andrew Levenox of Pluntoun in the parish of Kirkanders and shire of Kirkcudbright, who died on 27 Jan., 1596, given up by her said spouse, whom
she appointed Executor, before John Levenox of Kalie, Alexander Levenox and others.
The Estate is valued at £2050, consisting of farm stock and plenishing. She was due £304:6:8, including sums to John Levenox of Kalie and Alexander Levenox, merchant in Kirkcudbright.
Her Testament is dated at Pluntoun 14 Jan., 1596, and in it she appoints her said spouse her only Executor. Her body is to be buried in the Kirk of Girthon and her husband is to agree with her brother the Laird of Kalie at the sight of three or four honest friends to hold the lands of Pluntoun in the name and surname of Lennox. She leaves 200 marks to Margaret Lennox, eldest daughter of the Laird of Kalie to be paid at her marriage; £20 to Alexander Levenox her father's brother german; some grain to Janet Levenox her half sister and some to Alexander Levenox her natural brother; she leaves to James Schaw 300 marks after her husband's death if he serve the said Andrew well, and certain other things she leaves to Katharine and Margaret Shaw. Confirmed as above, Alexander Gordon of Barskeoch, cautioner. (Vol. 32.)
